Earlier today, someone called me today and requested that I give him the last 4 digits of my SSN. Stupidly, I did (while regretting it immediately afterwards). After he heard it, he told me that I was not the right person he was looking for and immediately hung up. Should I be worried at all about a possible case of identity theft arising from this? From what it seems, he knows my full name, home phone number, and now, the last four digits of my SSN.

O.k. Last year i got arrested for the first time and had to do the whole AFIS thing. Put my hand on a scanner that searches the nation for any criminal history. The report came back with my history and someone else’s. A white male born in 1949 that lives in FLwith a serious criminal history. Remind you i was born in 1978 and is a bl/female in OH. This guy is old enough to be my grfather and some of his cases was b4 i was born and after.lol The police will not give me a copy i guess because its someone else’s history and thats the only proof to go to social security with. I already went w/o it and they did nothing. So what do i do in a case like this?

I got a call from a friend of mine, friend “M”, that ex-boyfriend “C” is the victim of identity theft. “M” says that “C” has been a victim for quite some time. Now, I dated “C” off and on for 2 years and our dating relationship always started off great but more times than I care to count he had left me and quit talking to me and then eventually came back, that was the pattern. I finally took a stand and I left him for good, I have not talked to him since September 2008. “M” has left me with, for lack of a better term, the responsibility/obligation of either telling or not telling “C” this piece of very important information about his already damaged credit. I’m not even sure if “C” knows what is going on with his credit but just in case he doesn’t know, would your advice be for me to tell him or not?

After fleeing poverty in his native Uruguay, Miguel Angel Ortiz settled in Hampton Roads and established himself as an expert welder. He formed his own business and obtained shipyard contracts worth more than $1 million.

Married with three children, the youngest about 10 months old, he had been living in a stately waterfront home in Virginia Beach. Two full-size bronze lions were perched out front near a four-tier fountain. He drove a Hummer and had a spare in the driveway
Ortiz built this life using someone else’s identity and after racking up an extensive arrest record in this country.

His case raises new questions about how an illegal immigrant who served jail time had not only remained in the country undetected but built a corporation and amassed wealth.

Through interviews and court records, including Ortiz’s confession, The Virginian-Pilot uncovered the life of a man who exploited loopholes in the immigration system and skirted detection – until this year.

Ortiz was arrested in April after he applied to have his passport renewed under the name Alfredo Rivera Jr. The State Department began investigating after determining that the picture on the passport did not match the picture of Rivera in the agency’s files. Ortiz’s life has since unraveled.

After pleading guilty in May to identity theft charges, Ortiz was sentenced Aug. 20 in Norfolk’s U.S. District Court to 27 months in prison. Upon release, he will be processed for deportation.

Ortiz, 41, first arrived in the United States from Uruguay in 1987. He left and returned, illegally, in 1992.

To remain in the country, Ortiz bought a birth certificate and Social Security card in 1996 for $8,000 in New York, according to court records. Ortiz assumed the identity of Alfredo Rivera Jr., the name on the documents. At the time, the real Rivera was living in New York. It’s unclear from the records whether the two men know each other or whether Rivera ever found out his identity was stolen. He could not be located.

Ortiz obtained a passport in Rivera’s name and moved to Virginia

I just recieved an iPod shuffle for Christmas and I would like to get an iTunes account to download music, but my dad is worried that someone would get his debit card information through iTunes. This could be a problem do to the fact that I am under 18 and the only money I recieve is allowence. Also, I plan to only use iTunes gift cards so is there any way to sign up without using a credit card, but with that? I know that AOL offers accounts without a credit card, but I have comcast. Furthermore, has there been any major identity theft cases caused by iTunes since they started using industry standard encryption to protect the confidentiality of those who give them their personal information? Thanks in advance!

So, if someone applies for a credit card with their name and your social, it affects you pretty bad, esp. if they don’t pay it. I got that much. But how do people not know about the card before it goes into collections if your credit report has your address on it? Shouldn’t you be getting the bill every month and then realize the account is not valid? Or does the thief put their address on it, in which case how does the application get approved if the info doesn’t match? I’m confused as to how people can be identity theft victims and no one realizes it until they are in over their head.
But if its my name and my social then how do they get away with using the card so much? I would think that they would put their name and my social because credit reports are tied to social security numbers so they could still use it that way, if it was my name then they couldn’t use it…or at least not as often.
