So i used to have credit protection through my capital one card, it was through a different agency, and they gave me a credit report with the score, activity, open accounts, etc. i could even access it onliine, and they had a $10,000 protection..that was really good for me, i just stopped using it but now i want to find another service like that that i could access online and everything..with insurance and all..whats the best one?

heres my story:

When i had that service i noticed accounts that i did not open. they maxed out and stopped using it. im not sure if it was through my social security number or not, but it definitely made my credit score crap.

now i need to know the steps i should take to clearing my name. preferrably online filing and such…but i need to fix this because now im living on my own and i need a car and loans..

thanks!

You should have taken action as soon as you noticed the problem. If you have any idea how your identity might have been stolen, such as your wallet was stolen with all our ID, you need to report such a theft to the police and you need a copy of that police report. Whether or not there has been such police-reportable event, you need to report the identity theft to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), which maintains a database on ID theft. Then from your credit report, track down all the misbegotten accounts and report the ID theft, and file ID-theft complaints on each ID-theft account with the reporting bureaus. And “freeze” your credit report so no new accounts can be opened (you’ll then have to “unlock” it when you apply for a car loan, etc, but you cannot get one now anyway.)

Do not bother with paying any sort of “credit counseling” service, as they really can’t do much of anything except spend your money.
