In the United States alone, this is the fastest growing crime. In 2002, the Federal Trade Commission or simply put the FTC reported 43 percent of the fraud complaints they received where for identity theft. With the 2003 report, the incidents reached close to 10 million.

For every five families, there is always one who will fall prey to these thieves. It is hard not to be a victim even when every precaution in the book has been taken. Even though it seems you have safe guarded your data, the thieves always manage to stay a step ahead.

Understand that everything you do leaves a trail. Whether you use your pin number, write a check, sign up for a credit card or even order something online, thieves, if they want, will get your information.

No matter how hard you try, there lurks the possibility that existing information can still find their way to the identity thieves. Be aware of this fact and cautious with whom you give your vital data out to. Knowing this tactic, can put you above those who just give out their information.

It has been estimated that people spend approximately $500 and more than 30 hours to resolve. Some cases begin from a credit getting stolen to a person’s identity being completely “kidnapped”. These crimes are hard to prevent. Because of this, identity theft is hard to correct.

Identity theft is considered a white collar crime. It is because the thieves get in touch with the person directly to steal the information by deception and lies. They will also try and get any money from them that they can.

This crime does not need face to face contact for the thief to steal your identity or your cash. The ID theft is not committed just for the sake of having it but rather using it for other criminal means including to commit fraud.

Until 1998, the federal law had not caught up with this type of crime. In fact, it wasn’t until that year, that cases of a bigger magnitude started to show up. It was then that people began to see they needed a heavier sentence imposed on those who committed the fraud in the first place.

Thanks to these numerous cases, the laws were changed so some of these could be used as prosecuting the thieves. Some were changed or enhanced to repair their credit reports or recoup their losses and reputations.

The primary identity theft statute is 18 U.S.C.

Keep in mind that in the United States you have the legal right to review a copy of your credit report once annually for no charge. This means that you are able to get a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. By requesting a free copy of your credit report from each agency at different intervals throughout the course of a year, you will be able to accomplish the task to monitor credit report regularly without spending money to do so.

If you discover unusual activity in your effort to monitor credit report, you need to take immediate steps to report these problems. For example, you will want to immediately notify the credit reporting agencies so that they will put a fraud alert on your account and take other action as necessary. Moreover, you will want to report the fact that you believe you are the victim of identity theft to all of the financial institutions, credit card companies and so forth that you do business with at this time. Additionally, you will want to contact law enforcement as well.

The term identity theft, which is stealing and using someone else’s identity, was coined in 1964. It has also been called impersonation, identity fraud, and identity cloning. Identity theft has become more popular in the past few years because of the growing popularity of the Internet. It now easier to steal someone else’s identity and it is now harder to catch an identity theft. This makes it even more important to understand what identity theft is, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Identity theft has been around long before the internet. At first it the identity theft usually found the necessary information by going through other people’s garbage. Then soon after phones were invented, phone scams came into existence. Now that there are computers, the Internet, and electronic gadgets, all being used to store personal information, identity theft has become the fastest growing crime.

Someone might want to steal someone else’s identity to obtain credit, goods, or services at the victim’s expense. This is one of the most common reasons for identity theft. Also, criminals hiding from authorities or someone wanting to hide from creditors may steal someone’s identity so they themselves can stay anonymous. Also, sometimes people use another identity to obtain medicine or medical services. This can result in errors in the victim’s medical record. Illegal immigrants might steal someone’s identity so they can live and work within the country.

Individuals who steal another person’s identity first need to get information on that person. They do so by looking in their trash for papers they may have thrown away that contains personal information. They may also steal their bank cards, passports, ID cards, checks, or other personal belongings, or they might look over someone’s shoulder as they punch in their passwords at the ATM or at a public computer. This is referred to as shoulder surfing. They also may be able to find information on the person’s computer, phone, flash drive, PDA, or other electronic devices. Sometimes they hack into the person’s computer. They might also post fake jobs online and require an application in which they ask for personal information. They might even find some information they can use from what the person has posted on social networking sites.

Luckily, it is possible to protect yourself against identity theft. Some of the ways to protect yourself include doing online shopping only at sites that you know and trust, bringing in your mail as soon as possible, and having anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed on your computer. Choose good passwords for all your online accounts such as e-mails, auction sites, online bank accounts, and online payment accounts. A good password should have lowercase letters, upper case letters, and numbers. Depending on the site, they may also allow dashes, underscores, and other special characters. Also, never give out personal information on the phone, chat rooms, or suspicious websites. Also be In addition, be careful not to post too much personal information on social networking sites. You also shouldn’t leave papers lying around that have personal information on them, such as checks, credit card statements, and bank receipts. If you want to dispose of such documents, don’t just throw them in the trash. Instead shred them in a paper shredder or burn them.

Even if you take precautions, you might still become a victim of identity theft. If you do, you can report it by calling your bank and credit card companies, and by filing a report with the police

There are other ways in which crooks can secure personal information from you and use such data for their shady dealings. One type of identity theft becoming more common today involves health care. In this scenario, a criminal steals your personal information and it is subsequently used to secure medical coverage. This could cause incorrect medical information to be added to your Medical Information Bureau files, potentially leading to life-threatening mis-diagnoses and future denials of coverage. This kind of identity theft is very costly to insurance companies, which raises everyone’s premiums. Fraud alerts are of no value with this type of identity theft, because your credit report is not involved. In addition, a high degree of expertise is required to clean up these kinds of identity theft issues.

Learning about how to avoid identity theft scams is becoming increasingly vital in today’s high tech world of light-speed information sharing. While we can certainly educate ourselves and minimize the risk of becoming a victim, it is wise to find reputable companies to help with early detection and identity restoration expertise. In this day and age, failing to have these relatively low cost services in place would make about as much sense as driving without car insurance. With identity theft now officially America’s fastest growing crime, it’s not if we’ll need these services it’s when.

Identity theft is a growing problem in the United States. Tens of thousands of people each year fall victim to identity theft. This crime drastically changes the lives of its victims. There are so many things that you can do to protect yourself against this crime. Many Americans make wiser choices each day, with the hopes that they are protecting themselves against this crime. There is however something else that they need to do. Identify theft has taken on a whole different look. Many children are the newest victims of identity theft. Obtaining a child’s social security number is a dream come true for a criminal. They could very possibly use one child’s SSN for ten or fifteen years before anyone is even aware of the crime. There are many things that you can do to protect your child against identify theft.

1. Do not give your child’s social security number to anyone. There is really no need for anyone besides possibly your accountant to have a hold of your child’s social security number.

2. Explain to your older children the importance of keeping their social security number private. Make sure they understand the repercussions of sharing it with the wrong people.

3. Do not allow your children to be in possession of their social security card. There is no reason that anyone should carry it with them in their wallets. Once they are old enough and applying for colleges they should then memorize it.

4. If your child keeps his or her medical insurance card on their person make sure it does not have their social security number printed on the card. If it does request a card without that information from your insurance carrier.

5. Make sure that your computer has updated virus protection. Make sure your children do not purchase anything online using their bank account information and show them the difference between a secure site and an unsecure site when making online purchases.

One of the ever rising criminal acts in the United States over the past five years has become identity theft. More and more Americans are purchasing paper shredders and are refraining from giving out their personal information over the internet. What people are not so aware of is that their children are at risk for identity theft as well. To a criminal a child’s social security number is much more valuable than an adult’s. It is less likely for a child to realize that their social has been stolen. They are most likely not going to apply for a loan until they are in college or apply for a credit card until they are at least 18 years of age. This is why to a criminal a child’s SSN is invaluable. Here are some things that you can do to protect your child against identity theft.

1. Do not give your child’s social security number out. There really is no reason that you should have to with the exception of on your tax returns and possibly some medical documents.

2. Refrain from giving your child their social security card or number. They really do not need it unless they are applying for a job or applying to college

3. Explain to your child why it is important that they do not carry their social security card with them and that they do not give it out to anyone. If they are young adults they will understand what identity theft is and why it is a crime

4. Shred any papers that have your child’s social security number on it.

5. If your child is going away to college and will be carrying his or her medical insurance card with them it is important that you remove his or her social security number from the card or ask the medical insurance carrier to print a card without their social security number on it. There is no reason for them to carry that in their wallet.
