There is a substantial increase in the number of identity thieves. Everyone should be worried about the statistics. Fortunately, it is not that hard to protect your identity against the fastest-growing criminal activity in the country. The most important thing is for you to be very careful in giving away your personal information whether online or offline.

There are three common types of identity thefts – bank fraud, phone fraud, and credit card fraud. In whatever method they use, these criminals gain access to your account information, pretend to be you and purchase items or open new lines of credit, withdraw money from your account and so on. However, these are some ways to protect yourself from these thieves.

Don’t bring all your credit cards wherever you go.

If you limit the number of cards you carry, you won’t lose that much in case you are robbed. Also, make sure you don’t bring with you records of PIN.

Lock your credit profiles at the credit bureaus.

You have the right to call the credit bureaus and ask them to freeze your accounts. This way, no new credit can be made without your permission and no one or no company can gain access to your credit profile without your consent. By locking your credit profile, only you and the companies or banks you have credit relationship with can view your profile. This step is very beneficial because it closes one of the avenues where thieves get your personal info and it stops pre-approved credit applications from arriving at your mailbox.

Get a Post Office box

This is a locked mailbox that keeps your incoming mails safe from everyone, especially from thieves. When you already have this secure mailbox, have your check, bills, and other important mails sent to this locked box.

Be extra careful when giving away your personal information.

Since this can’t be avoided when shopping or doing transactions online, make sure that the person or company you’re dealing with is legitimate. Before you type your credit card number, look at the address bar first and make sure that the site’s URL starts with “https.” Also look for the closed padlock symbol at the bottom right hand corner of your browser. If that symbol appears, it means your browser is strongly connected to the website.

In fact, as the Internet continue to expand, the problem is sure to continue to get worse. You must take every precaution to protect your most valuable sensitive information, such as your banking information, your social security number, and other personal information. If your credit cards are stolen, it is imperative that you call the issuer immediately and have them canceled. It is much easier to replace the card than to repair the damage cause by criminals who get their hands on them. When it comes to your trash, to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting hold of sensitive information, a 7-sheet crosscut paper shredder will eliminate the problem.

You must also be very careful of the possible dangers involved from receiving unsolicited junk mail. and since much identity theft occurs online, here are some extra precautions below you need to take to protect yourself on the Internet.

DO:
1. Order a copy of your credit report each year from one of the national credit bureaus and review it closely for any questionable entries.

2. Shred or cut up all credit card receipts and old bank statements and bills before throwing them away.

3. Close all unused credit card or bank accounts.

4. Remove your name from mailing lists for pre-approved credit lines and telemarketers.

5. Keep your PIN number hidden when you use an ATM or public telephone.

6. Contact your creditor or service provider if you notice odd charges or if expected bills don’t arrive.

7. Update your computer virus software, use a secure browser, and install a firewall program.

Don’t:
1. Give out personal information via the phone, mail, or Internet unless YOU initiated contact.

2. Carry information like your Social Security Number (SSN) or any PIN numbers or passwords in your purse or wallet.

3. Put your SSN on your checks or other identifiers.

There’s no such thing as too much security when it comes to your good name, do whatever it takes to protect your sensitive information.

If you’ve ever been a victim of identity theft or consumer scams, you know how the situation left you feeling: violated and upset. Even if you’ve never personally experienced identity or consumer fraud, you probably know someone who has. You can protect yourself from the negative results of these unfortunate events with the following identity theft and consumer protection tips.

Tips to prevent identity theft:

Shred or destroy documents. It is important to securely dispose of any documents that include personal information, including bank statements, receipts and bills. Shred them or tear them up appropriately when you throw them away. A common cause of identity theft is thieves rummaging through garbage and locating personal information.
Keep personal information private. Be careful about where you leave personal documents, e.g. don’t leave personal information unattended on your desk at work.
Use caution when offering information over the phone. You should never give your credit card or bank account number over the phone unless you initiated the call. Also, be aware of who is listening when you are relaying private information over the phone. Eavesdroppers can easily jot down your Social Security number or bank account number as you rattle them off.
Be careful with your cards and personal information. Secure all of your cards: write “see ID” on the signature line to ensure that cashiers are asking for the proper identification. Try not to carry more cards than you need. Don’t keep your Social Security card, birth certificate or passport on you unless it’s necessary.
Keep records. Keep a list of all your credit cards, credit card companies’ telephone numbers, loan information, account numbers and expiration dates so you can notify creditors in case of theft or loss. This will save you valuable time if you ever find your purse or wallet is missing.
Monitor your credit. Keep track of your financial records on a regular basis. While you don’t need to check your credit score on a monthly basis, a quarterly or semi-annual monitoring should suffice.

Tips to prevent consumer scams:

Shop reputable companies. Only make purchases from companies you know to be reputable. You can find a list of trusted companies on the Better Business Bureau website.
Understand the policies. Review the return, refund and cancellation policies before making a purchase from any company. These policies are not only put in place to protect the company, but also to protect you, the consumer.
Keep all documentation. Make sure you hold on to all of the records of your purchase including receipts, confirmation emails and even the bank statements on which the purchase appears. These may come in handy if a question arises about receiving a refund for a return or even fraudulent charges.
Contact the company if an issue arises. If you do have a concern with a product you received or a question about a charge you may not understand, contact the seller directly. Keep records of your conversations. Write down the names of the people you spoke with, when you spoke to them and what they said. Also, save all email correspondence.
Don’t be afraid to escalate your concern. If you find that you are still not being adequately helped, ask to speak with a manager or someone at the company headquarters. You should never feel like you need to accept a fraudulent charge or another consumer scam no matter how minor it may seem.
Write a letter of complaint. When a phone call fails to bring closure, you may also write a letter of complaint. Your letter may reach an entirely different audience at the company. The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Consumer Protection website also recommends including copies (not the originals) of the following documents with your complaint letter:
Sales receipts
Repair orders
Warranties
Cancelled checks
Contracts
Any documented correspondence

Take the appropriate next steps. According to the FTC, if your phone call or letter does not receive an appropriate response and you believe you may be the victim of consumer fraud, you should investigate the following options. Find these individuals’ names, addresses, and phone numbers, and contact them:

State attorney general’s office
Local consumer protection office
Better Business Bureau
Local Postmaster
Local media including television, radio, or newspaper consumer hotlines

Identity theft occurs when someone uses personally identifying information, such as Social Security numbers or credit card numbers, without permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. Thieves obtain this personally identifiable information by going through business trash, intercepting credit card information, “pretexting” or “phishing” to obtain personal information under false pretenses, or hacking into vulnerable computer systems.

Identity theft is serious. While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend thousands of dollars and countless hours repairing damage to their good name and credit record. Some victims may lose out on jobs, or be denied loans because of negative information on their credit reports. In rare cases, they may even be arrested for crimes they did not commit. And the business that allows customer information to be compromised faces a significant customer relations problem.

Many companies collect personal information from their customers, including names, addresses, and phone numbers; bank and credit card account numbers; income and credit histories; and Social Security numbers. In addition, businesses collect and store a multitude of personal information from their employees as well. It is essential that businesses take adequate steps to safeguard this data, and to prevent identify theft.

Employers should keep employee personnel records under lock and key. These records contain names, addresses and Social Security numbers, as well as performance information and salary history. Stored separately, and also under lock and key, should be information relating to employee health information, including workers comp information, doctors’ notes, and leave requests.

These records should be taken out only when needed, and otherwise locked. Employees should not leave this information lying around. Rather, employees should secure such information if they need a bathroom break or are needed on the sales floor.

Protecting customer information is just as important.

First, be conservative in what information is collected in the first place. What is the minimum amount of information needed on each customer? Social Security numbers should be used only for reporting employee taxes and not as customer identification numbers.

Think about whether you should keep customer credit card numbers and expiration dates on file at all. Does it serve an important business function? Is the convenience to your customers of having this information on file important enough to justify the potential risks? Full credit card numbers should not be printed on receipts – use the last four digits only. Expiration dates should not be stored. Check the default settings on credit card processing machines and make sure they are not set to store this information permanently and are printing only the last four digits of the credit card number.

If you do need to keep private customer information for business reasons or to comply with the law, we recommend having a written document retention policy that sets forth how long you will keep the information, and how you will destroy it.

Paper records should be shredded so that they can’t be reconstructed. Media containing electronic records should be erased or destroyed so that records cannot be recovered or reconstructed.

Many of these records will be kept electronically. It is imperative that your computer have adequate firewalls and anti-virus protection. These programs should be updated regularly. Sensitive information should be kept in password protected files.

Sensitive information may also be stored in cash registers, inventory scanners or cell phones, and the security of these devices should be assessed as well. If possible, store sensitive information on a computer that does not have an Internet connection. Web applications, including those where you send information to vendors, are particularly vulnerable to hackers or security breaches.

If a computer is compromised, disconnect it immediately from Internet access. Investigate incidents immediately. You may be required by law to make certain notifications to customers, law enforcement, credit bureaus or your business partners (banks, credit card processors, etc). It is important to have a security plan in place.

It’s one of the fastest growing crimes in the country, and most victims are unaware they’ve become a target until long after the crime is committed. We’re talking about identity theft. In today’s world, information travels faster than ever, and that includes your personal information. If it falls into the wrong hands, your personal info could be used to acquire credit cards, loans, or to open accounts.

Unknown to you, somewhere, someone could be using your good name for their own criminal purposes, and you’ll be the one held accountable. In 2004, 3.6 million American households had at least one person who was a victim of identity theft. Don’t let it happen to you.

Prevention is key

The best way to fight identity theft is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Since you could be a victim right now and not know it for months, it’s important to check your credit report. Under an amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have a right to a free copy of your comprehensive credit report once every 12 months. Take advantage. Once you have your credit report in hand, check it carefully for any irregularities. It’s also a good idea to put a fraud alert on all of your credit reports. Also, secure your personal information at home, at work, and while you travel. Don’t leave your wallet or any important receipts lying around the house or the office. Someone can easily pick it up, write down a few numbers, and set it back down without you ever being the wiser.

At the house

1. If you are the kind who likes to take some of your work home, be careful not to let your personal data files get mixed up with work files on your hard drive.

2. As far as snail mail post goes, it is wiser to drop it off at the post office yourself rather than to leave it unattended in the mail box. Also, if you suddenly decide to go on a trip, do call the post office and ask them to hold your letters until you contact them again.

6. Many of us use the internet to make finance transactions today. If you have clients online that are rated badly by other users, try and find out why. Never give out personal information to anyone over the internet, unless it is a trusted company.

7. Use something like a Pay Pal account to make online purchases. Every time you use your credit card you are increasing the risk of identity theft.

8. Never give your social security number, card pin or other personal information to an unknown tele caller. On the other hand, if you have made the call for a reason, it may be ok to do so.

9. When ever you deal with a web site, look for their security policy.
